Workplace Reflection

Name of person you interviewed/listened to: Rachael White

Position: Event Operations Coordinator

Organisation: Events Queensland

What insights did you gain from conducting field research or listening to workplace interviews?

I always viewed Event Management as a very broad career, however I never stopped to think what it actually involved in regards to department. There are countless different departments I now know of which include but are not limited to: Operations, Marketing, Accounts, and Supervisors etc.
From this interview I believe it’s narrowed down that I would like to look further into the Operations Management side of Events.

Event management is also vastly connected to many different industries including Hospitality and Tourism which is something I hadn’t considered. I thought that all I would need to do was get my degree for Event Management and I’d be well equipped, however from this interview it seems more beneficial to know a bit about the other industries connected to this one.

Volunteers are also a large part of this industry, particularly for large events where they have a multitude of jobs needing to be filled, whether they are large or small. I always assumed they were all paid workers, however I see now that you need all these volunteers just to keep the event going.

And finally, on a more emotional level; it never crossed my mind the highs and lows that would come with planning events and their endings. The buildup of the event would keep you very busy and take up a lot of time and thought and as soon as the event has ended all of those thoughts and plans come to a sudden stop, which as the interviewee stated, can leave you in a slight void for a while as you have nothing else to focus on until the next event.

What do I need to do up until the time of my expected graduation?

The interviewee said it had taken her quite some time to figure out the actual career she wanted, and therefore completed a number of degrees before finally settling on Event Management. However I’ve known from the beginning that Event Management was for me.

Not only is it about the study and the degree itself, but also about what your participation is while at University. From the course outlines for this field of study I can see clearly what topics need to be covered to complete this degree which is the easy part.
I also now realise I need to get more involved in the Universities community aspect, applying for the GBS leadership program has been my first step. I also believe finding a club or group that helps in planning and running events inside and outside of University would also be beneficial. And finally getting my experience within this industry either through volunteering or acquiring a casual or part time job. This will not only give me the worldly experience I will need but also help me connect with potential employers, competition and clients.

With these tasks combined with studying this Major I believe I will be set on the right path to achieve my end goal of being and Events Manager.
